Hop On Over

I have moved!!! (Though I am still quite present here in all my past posts); however, in the future I will be posting at velvetleafboutique.com! This has me so excited! I hope you'll hop on over and check it out!

Over there I plan to share lots of good stuff detailing my continued journey of managing a handmade business and all the bits of goodness that inspire and motivate me on the way. And with that announcement I must bid you goodnight and God bless.

New Home Tour - Part 2 (The Bedroom)

This was the first room in our new place that we put together mostly because I always find it necessary to create a place of sanctuary and rest as quickly as possible when beginning to unpack and settle into a new home. We didn't make any new purchases to finish this space so the result is quite ecclectic, but I do find it comfortable and (bless my tolerant husband) maybe a little more feminine than we would otherwise have done had we bought things new. photo 6-25-14-7_zps4763e90d.jpg photo 6-25-14-4_zps258ac5a5.jpg photo 6-25-14-5_zps477671b7.jpg photo 6-25-14-1_zps7ff0e067.jpg photo 6-25-14-3_zpsb5924408.jpg
My sister-in-law surprised us with the scripture verse wall hanging as a sweet house warming gift the day after we moved in. I've always loved that passage and what a treat to be reminded of it every time I wake. You may remember the earring displays from this post

So there you have it. New Home Tour Part 2 complete! If you missed Part 1 you can view yesterday's post here.

Happy Wednesday all,

New Home Tour - Part 1 (The Living Room)

I must start by admitting I've already shared all three of these photos via instragram. So for some of you this post will be nothing new. I have however been wanting to do a home update on this blog since moving into our new place and these photos seem to tell the story best.

The living room was actually the final room to come together for us largely due to the fact that we needed to purchase a larger couch to fill the space. Unfortunately this took a bit of trial and error. We purchased one couch via the internet and had it delivered only to decide (after a week or two) that it did absolutely nothing for our space. Admitting our mistake, we rented a U-haul and made the return. The couch below was our successful second attempt. I am indeed thoroughly in love with it and so far the white hasn't been a problem (knock on wood). photo 6-24-14-1_zpsb18a7b3f.jpg You may remember the frame above the couch from this post? I truly am ashamed to admit I had that frame for eight years before finally tackling it as a project and turning it into something beautiful. But oh was it worth the wait... photo 6-24-14-2_zps83deee9f.jpg After perusing (to no avail) the internet for an inexpensive print to fill the frame, I sat myself down to do some painting. I used curtain fabric as my canvas since I had an abundance left over from the curtains I hemmed in Jack's room. You may laugh but I can't help savoring the thrill of my resourcefulness. The paint colors are a combination of little "count-by-number" colors I just happened to have on hand and the can of white furniture paint I used to paint the frame. The cardboard backing I used was given to me free by our nearby hardware store. Aside from the bit of hardware we purchased for hanging, I didn't have to spend another penny to complete this piece of art. Now that is what I call success!

And as for the other side of the room... photo 6-24-14-3_zpse57526a6.jpg
We found the mounted cabinet in the "as is" section of Ikea. Works perfectly for storing my piano music and has proved to be most functional. As you can plainly see, our little future musician approves.

Happy Tuesday everyone! May it be a terrific one.

A Day of Simple Delights

There is just something about a cozy colorful sweater and a cup of coffee in hand...

Not to mention swinging with my dear sweet boy on my lap. I am truly blessed!

Back at Last

I've been toying with thoughts of remaking my blog. Sadly every time I begin I immediately realize I do not have the time for such an overhaul no matter how FUN it would inevitably be. So for now this design and layout are here to stay. And I promise to pop in as often as possible to share bits and pieces of creativity...

Such as this to-die-for frame I stole from Goodwill for $7.99. It has been sleeping in storage for far too long and was ready to be awakened with five coats of fresh white paint! photo 3_zps40b76bd7.jpg
I would imagine the ornate details of the frame might truly pop in any color but I always try to use what I have on hand, so white I went... photo 1_zps5d752111.jpg
Seriously. The result is so pleasing I could stand and look at it for hours. photo 4_zps2fe04f7d.jpg Only to take breaks as I search for the perfect piece of art to showcase this beauty of a frame. That's a little backwards I admit. Kinda like buying a dress to fit the shoes. (And yes I'm pretty sure I've done that also).

Oh blogging how I've missed you.

It's a happy thing to be back!

Easy Christmas Banner and Pretty Decor Ideas

As I've probably said numerous times before, this is my absolute favorite time of year! I love what it stands for and the fact that we as Christians get to openly celebrate Christ's love for us. I love the emphasis on giving and receiving gifts as a reflection of God giving us His Son so we can receive salvation.

And along with all that depth, I love the beautiful lights and sparkle all over the city and through my front door... photo 6_zps5b0b4507.jpg photo 4_zps8b77f1e2.jpg photo 3_zpsd95abfb3.jpg photo 9_zpsbc065e6b.jpg photo 7_zps986642be.jpg photo 8_zpsb27efbd6.jpg photo 2_zps47451981.jpg photo 1_zpsf60c344a.jpg
I hope you enjoyed that little peek inside our home and maybe you got a few ideas to add to your decor this year.

p.s. I love the banner best hanging from the dresser knobs but of course that doesn't work with a baby crawling around. Under the wreath was second best. It will have to do.

Now off I go to sip a cup of tea and spend some time in the Word before my little one wakes up!

Merry Christmas all,

Decorating Walls on a Budget

I am no great painter. I will begin by saying that. But I am a big fan of color and having fun with art! And when I look at my new living room wall, I feel happy and admittedly a little proud to know I made these mini masterpieces myself! photo 5_zps792353ca.jpg
After this project the greatest painting advice I can offer is to give yourself the freedom to "play" when you paint. No pressure! If you have a color palette already established, you can create some pretty and easy wall art using one simple brush stroke. Back and forth. Changing colors when you feel the need. Blending as you go. Until something lovely emerges. photo 6_zps3341d869.jpg
I love the fact that collages are so popular lately. No need to spend a fortune on one large piece to fill a big empty wall. Lots of small goodies will do the trick. In my opinion, the more the merrier. The key of course is hanging them artistically which is (I suspect) easier than one might think. Pretty sure there is more than one right answer when it comes to hanging arrangements! photo 7_zpsd80226ea.jpg
By the way, Ikea has some fantastically inexpensive frames! They also have little mini prints on sale every now and then. The one in the tan frame came in a set of five for 98 cents. Steal! photo 4_zps8d56646a.jpg Craft paper makes a great frame filler too. There are dozens of cute options to choose from and you can change them out as frequently as you please. photo 2_zps6188ab05.jpg One last thing, I don't know about you but I am often frustrated by the prices of throw pillows. You can thus imagine my delight when I found these four darlings for 8 bucks apiece on clearance at Target! Perfect for me as a lover of orange. Isn't it true that people either love or hate orange? Maybe that's why these were on sale. So I must say thanks to all you haters of orange for not buying them at full price! photo 1_zps07fe5af1.jpg
There you have it. My new living room in a nutshell! I'm sure this space will continue to transform as new inspiration comes my way, but for now I find it homey and inviting and am enjoying it to the fullest. Of course, the new keyboard doesn't hurt. Some of my favorite family moments of late consist of after-dinner piano music (by me) while James plays with Jack on the floor.

So much to be thankful for! Looking forward to a week of gratitude...

You may have noticed I missed last Wednesday's very important posting day! Here's the latest addition... photo blog1_zps2bb99656.jpg

Bombers for Babies - New Item Wednesday

As I type this I'm intermittently feeding my little man a snack. Some late afternoon oatmeal if you wish to know. He thinks it's fun to bite down on the spoon every time it enters his mouth. Maybe that's why this post is getting written so slowly. Regardless, it seems appropriate to mention him in this post since this week's new item was inspired especially by him. Last week we experienced a bit of a chill and I realized I did not have the appropriate head dressing for my son's little head. The one hat we did own was not only quickly becoming too small, but was finding itself tossed to the ground repeatedly by its wearer. Hence, I set to work designing a size appropriate hat that could withstand the numerous attempts at dethronement. Success... photo blog1_zps8d9b2459.jpg photo 1_zps2844e065.jpg These darling little baby bombers are now available at The Velvetleaf Boutique. To see more photos or place an order, visit here.

The Importance of Setting Goals

I'm popping in today to share some thoughts on goal setting. Day to day goals. Super practical. Super attainable. Super life changing. I am a strong believer in redeeming the time. This isn't to say that rest and relaxation get thrown out the window. In fact, sometimes rest and relaxation might be the only two goals I set for a given day. photo 1_zps78fdc116.jpg
Here is what I've found works well for me. I try to have a date with my planner either in the evening right before bed or in the afternoon after I finish my devotions (If baby's nap allows it). I spend a little time thinking about the things I want to be intentional about: being a wife, a mother, a shop owner. These are the three missions God has currently blessed me with. My goals then come when I ask myself how I can be more God honoring in each of these areas. How can I reflect the character of my heavenly Father and pour love into these three outlets?

My goals really end up looking like a to-do list, but an inspired one. Each item having a deeper purpose behind it. Getting groceries is no longer just getting groceries. It's a mission to have on hand the ingredients I need to have a meal ready for my man when he gets home from work. This is something my hubby greatly appreciates and it is one way for me to show him I love him and am grateful for him and his hard work. A trip to the library becomes a treasure hunt for fun children's books, little gems that bring joy and a smile to my sweet son's face when we read together.

I make my list and the next day I follow it, using my time to invest in my family and my work. Praising God for His kindness and another day to honor Him with all He's given me.

Happy Monday dear reader.
